National Youth Theatre

The National Youth Theatre was established in 1956 as the first youth theatre in the world. Over the past 60 years it has nurtured the talent of hundreds of thousands of young people and continues to be recognised as a world-leading youth arts organisation.

 

cc|be was delighted to be appointed to deliver Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health services for phase 1 of this exciting project.

Phase 1 of the project introduces much needed additional rehearsal space as well as reconciling office and admin teams into a single building. The project includes refurbishment of the existing workshop space, creating a large 200 seat studio theatre.

 

Because of poor air quality and noise levels spaces facing Holloway Road are mechanically ventilated. However, towards the rear of the building, where air quality and noise issues are lessened, we have adopted a “mixed mode” approach to ventilation of the large 200 seat studio theatre. When conditions permit, or for low occupancy rehearsals, natural ventilation will be employed. As the occupancy numbers and/or heat gain inside the room increase, low energy “boost” fans will assist the natural ventilation paths to provide additional outside air and natural cooling effect.

 

Throughout the building we are using the significant thermal mass of the existing concrete and brick construction to maximise nighttime cooling and reduce the need for mechanical cooling.

 

The project also involves the provision of improved lighting, electrical distribution and heating system control, to reduce running costs and improve the sustainability of the organization and building alike.
